Under the
instruction of Joel Quenneville and a roster that looks like you just drafted a
fantasy team with nobody else in your league, the Chicago Blackhawks have just
won their 3rd Stanley Cup in 6 seasons. It didn’t take people more
than 5 minutes after the clock hit 0:00 in game 6 at the United Center and
people were already calling it a dynasty. While I agree what’s happening with
Chicago hockey right now is something very special and something that you will
tell your kids about, let’s remember what a real Chicago dynasty is - Chicago Bulls, 6 titles in 8 years. Now I know
some of you may say, “But it’s hockey, the salary cap makes it a lot harder.”
While I agree, let’s not forget that the Montreal Canadians won 10 Cups in 14
years, ending in 1979. Also, the Blackhawks have yet to win a Cup back-to-back
(until next year).
Even though NHL Commissioner,
Gary Bettman, pronounced at the conclusion of game 6, “I’d say you have a
dynasty,” let’s not forget that he is the Commissioner and is looking to set up
more buzz throughout the offseason. I think Blackhawks' owner, Rocky Wirtz,
said it perfectly in regards to the team being a dynasty, “I think it’s a fine
compliment, but I’m not sure we’re there yet.” It’s going to take the Blackhawks
proving themselves again next year for me to refer to them as a dynasty, then
again maybe I am just getting greedy.
