11 Chicago Sports Facts: Did You Know?


  •  From 1926 to 1986, the team name “Blackhawks” was two words – “Black Hawks”. It was changed back to Blackhawks when some original documents were found with it being one word.
  • The Bears have been involved in two games that ended with a score of 2-0. Both were against the Packers. 
  • No White Sox player has ever hit 50 home runs in a single season. I know what you’re thinking, but The Big Hurt only had 43 as his career high.
  • Michael Jordan retired twice in his career. First in 1993, where he later returned in 1995, before retiring for good in 1998.
  • The Cubs are the 5th most valuable team in the MLB with an estimated value of $1.8 billion, behind the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Giants.
  • The Blackhawks team logo was designed by the wife of the team’s first owner Frederic McLaughlin. Her names was Irene Castle.
  • The NFL’s shortest punt return for a touchdown in history happened on a windy day during the 1985 playoffs. Shaun Gayle got it at the 5-yard line and ran it in.
  • At the age of 22, Derrick Rose was the youngest player in NBA history to win the MVP award in 2011.
  • The Hawks have now won 6 National Hockey League championships: 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013, and 2015. 
  • The Bulls are the 3rd most valuable team in the NBA with an estimated value of $1 billion, behind the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers.
  • The Chicago Cubs haven’t won a World Series in 107 years. (Oops, did I say that?)
